RECENT BUY - INTERNATIONAL PAPER CO (NYSE: IP)

WE RECENTLY PURCHASED THE FOLLOWING:

INTERNATIONAL PAPER CO (IP)
Purchased 10 shares of UNP on 1/25/2016 at $33.00
Total Spent: $333.00; added $12.30 in forward dividends.

Another winter deal in the books! International Paper Co (IP) set a new 52-week low during the mid-day session. In fact, IP dipped as low as $32.50 during the afternoon session. Although we didn't pick up shares at the lowest point of the day, we did manage to pick up a few shares close to the bottom at $33.00.

We have been watching IP paper for awhile and saw the dip as an opportunity to add another great dividend paying company our family's dividend stocks portfolio.

Although we understand the price concerns, we believe that International Paper Co (IP) management has laid down the necessary foundations for the company to have a successful 2016 and beyond. We believe the high 4.7% yield provides a reasonable entry point. We have no problems sitting back and collecting the juicy 4.7% yield as we wait for a turnaround.

Below are a few pros and cons we compiled from a few recent articles found:

Pros:
  • IP is a large cap company with a capitalization of $13.5Bil.
  • Nearest competitor Avery Dennison (NYSE:AVY) has a much smaller capitalization of $5.6Bil.
  • IP is the world's leading producer of containerboards used to make corrugated brown boxes for shipping goods.  With E-commerce expected to grow steadily, sales in this category should continue to see steady growth.
  • 3rd-quarter earnings of .97 cents for 2015 beat estimates of .92 cents.
  • IP has a dividend yield of 4.7% and has been increased for the past 5 yrs.
  • Next Ex-dividend is 2/11/2016, which means we will get our first dividend payment on March 15th.
  • IP has a nice cash pile at $1.97Bil which allows it to continue to pay its high dividend and still have cash left over for stock buyouts and company investment.
  • IP has a 3-year CAGR of 13%.
  • S&P Capital IQ has a 4-star  (or buy) rating on IP with a price target of $52.00.

Cons:
  • Sales down in Industrial packaging, printer paper, and consumer packaging.
  • Concerns over pricing are running up and down the paper and packaging sector.
  • Recent Downgrade from Citi.

RECENT BUY (NYSE: UNP)

Union Pacific Corp (UNP)
Purchased 5 shares of UNP on 1/22/2016 at $69.70
Total Spent: $348.50; added $11.00 in forward dividends.

Another winter deal in the books! Union Pacific Corp (UNP) opened the day by setting a new 52-week low today. We saw the dip as an opportunity to add more shares to one of our existing holdings. Although we missed the opportunity to pick up shares at the lowest point of the day when it dipped to $67.06, we did manage to pick up a few shares at $69.70 before it closed the day at $71.00.

A 60 billion dollar dividend payer for since 1900 (over 115 years!) with a yield in the 3% range. We couldn't resist the opportunity to add to our current position. With today's purchase, we now own a total of 21 shares of UNP that will continue to provide our family with an estimated $46.20 in dividends a year. Given their long dividend history, we are confident that those dividends can be counted on for years to come.  And looking at the same history, it is likely that these dividends will continue to grow as well.

The Company's Upstream International business manages Shell's Upstream activities outside the Americas. The Company's Downstream business manages Shell's refining and marketing activities for oil products and chemicals.”

With today's 300+ drop in the market, most of the market was in the red. That only meant one thing for us long term DGI investors...more opportunities to add to our portfolio at a discount.  We decided to pick a company recently mentioned in our Ask The Reader segment.  We understand why many have choose to stay away from oil and energy stocks. But at today's prices, we just couldn't resist the opportunity to lower our cost basis on a company stock that we already owned and decided to add 14 more shares of RDS.B to our family's dividend stocks portfolio.

We picked up 8 initial shares of ROYAL DUTCH SHELL (RDS.B) back in March of this year. With our purchase today, we now own 23 total shares of RDS.B in our family's dividend stocks portfolio. Our purchase today lowered our cost basis on RDS.B from $59.97 to $51.47. Additionally, our estimated forward dividends grew another $52.64, putting our yearly dividends at approximately $3,431/year (excluding our Edwards Jones account) and $3,790/year (including our Edward Jones account).

Since we had already held RDS.B shares in our family's dividend stocks portfolios (WF and EJ Accounts), the portfolio remains unchanged at a total of 47 different dividend paying stocks/ETFs and also 4 companies that either don't pay a dividend our has currently suspended their dividends.

RECENT BUYS - (NYSE: WMT & VZ)

WE RECENTLY PURCHASED THE FOLLOWING

Wal-mart Stores, Inc (WMT)
Purchased 9 shares of WMT on 6/15/2015 at $72.00

Total money spent: $648.00
$17.64 added to annual dividends

Verizon Communications Inc (VZ)
Purchased 10 shares of VZ on 6/15/2015 at $47.00

Total money spent: $470.00
$22.00 added to annual dividends

Before today, we had 8 limit orders open for various stocks including (JNJ, BAX, OHI, OKS, TIS, HCP, WMT, and VZ).  This morning, 2 of the 8 orders were executed since the stock price reached our desired purchase price.  The first order was a purchased of WMT at $72.00. The second order was a purchase of VZ at $47.00.  We had actually bought shares in both WMT (click link for post) and VZ (click link for post) earlier this year so our purchase today was simply an addition to our current holdings. We now own 17 total shares in WMT and 35 total shares in VZ.  Both purchases not only added to our passive income stream, but also allowed us to average down our cost basis on two stocks that we plan to hang onto for the long haul.

Since our purchases of Wal-mart Stores, Inc (WMT) and Verizon Communications Inc (VZ) today were shares in companies that we already owned, our family's Dividend Stocks Portfolio remains the same with a total of 39 different dividend paying stocks/ETFs in the portfolio.

Our estimated forward dividends, however, grew another $39.64, putting our yearly dividends at approximately $2912/year (excluding our Edwards Jones account) and $3,294/year (including our Edward Jones account).

RECENT BUY - (NYSE: OKS)

WE RECENTLY PURCHASED THE FOLLOWING

ONEOK PARTNERS L P (OKS)
Purchased 12 shares of OKS on 6/4/2015 at $37.98
$37.92 added to annual dividends

We've been watching Oneok Partners L P (OKS) for a few months now. Today, the market provided us with an opportunity to add another company to our family's dividend stocks portfolio.

OKS currently has a great yield at 8.42% and a decent 9 year history of consecutive dividend increase, but looking at the payout ratio, one has to be concerned that OKS can not keep up the increases for much longer.  With that said, I am buying in with the notion that there may not be more raises in the coming future, and hopefully no decreases. :)

All in all, we are happy to be shareholders at today's discounted prices. With our purchase of Oneok Partners L P (OKS) today, our family's dividend stocks portfolio now holds a total of 39 different dividend paying stocks/ETFs in the portfolio. Our estimated forward dividends grew another $37.92, putting our yearly dividends at approximately $2,872/year (excluding our Edwards Jones account) and $3,254/year (including our Edward Jones account).

HCP, Inc
 (HCP)
Purchased 9 shares of HCP on 5/29/2015 at $38.75
Total Spent: $348.75
$20.34 added to annual dividends

Our purchase of HCP, Inc (HCP) was based on the results from our recent ASK THE READERS post. On Tuesday, after the votes were tallied, we set a limit order to buy HCP, Inc at $38.75.  This afternoon, the market provided us with an opportunity to add another company to our family's dividend stocks portfolio. In fact, HCP, Inc actually set a new 52-week low today when it dipped as low as $38.53.  We didn't pick up shares at the today's bottom but we are still happy grabbing a few shares at the limit price we had established.  Plus, as typical for an initial purchase, we didn't spend a huge amount of capital.  If HCP, Inc. continues to dip into the low $30s, we wouldn't have any problems grabbing few more shares to average down our cost basis.

With the recent purchase HCP, Inc (HCP), our family's dividend stocks portfolio now holds a total of 38 different dividend paying stocks/ETFs in the portfolio. Our estimated forward dividends grew another $20.34, putting our yearly dividends at approximately $3,196/year.

Collection of RECENT BUYS (Summary) - April 2015

Since I began investing in dividend stocks approximately a year and a half ago I've been keeping a personal log of what other dividend bloggers and dividend investors are buying.  Until now, I've just done it for my own personal knowledge and it has proven to be a great resource I use when I have no idea what I should buy.

The collection essentially highlights the Recent Buys I have discovered throughout the dividend blog community. I always like to see what others are buying.  And with this collection, one can easily see all the buys in one centralized source.  In November of 2014, I started making my collection of Recent Buys available on my blog for everyone. I Hope everyone has found it to be a great resource!

In case you just want a quick summary of what everyone has been buying this past month, below is a chart that depicts just that! :)
(The chart and table above only includes companies with more than 1 buy)

April wasn't the buying frenzy that March was but it was still a pretty active buying month around the DGI community.  Throughout the month of April, we found a total of 47 buys (compared to the 62 buys found last month).

Out of a total of 47 buys found around the DGI community, a total of 8 companies were bought more than once.  Johnson and Johnson (JNJ) was the clear winner with a total of 7 buys this past month.  Tied for second was Omega Healthcare Investors (OHI) and T.Row Price Group, Inc (TROW) with 4 buys a piece. Rounding third was Wal-Mart Stores (WMT) with a total of 3 buys.  And there was a 4-way tie for fourth between HCP, Inc. (HCP), National Oilwell Varco (NOV), Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF (VTI), and Phillip Morris Int'l (PM).

Our family was less active adding capital to our family's dividend stocks portfolio this past month.  We did, however, still managed to purchase a few shares of the 3rd most popular stock Wal-Mart Stores (WMT) on April 22nd.  I know its not a great excuse but both work and life got the best of us this past month.  Hopefully, May provides our family with more free time as well as buying opportunities!

What have you been buying?  Please feel free to share in the comments or send me a link to your Recent Buy post in case I've missed it.

Don't forget to bookmark or add this page to your favorites!!

As with my collection of stock analyses, my goal is to make this collection also become a centralized source for everyone. It could become a place where one can get ideas on what to invest in next, to establish a desired stock purchase price, or simply to see what your favorite bloggers are buying.  Whatever your reason, my hope is that this collection proves to be a great reference tool and helps provide you that little extra advantage that you are looking for in order to succeed with your investing.

RECENT BUY - (NYSE: WMT)

WE RECENTLY PURCHASED THE FOLLOWING

Services & Providers
Wal-Mart Stores, Inc (WMT)
Purchased 8 shares of WMT today (4/22/2015) at $77.75
Total Spent: $622.00
$14.40 added to annual dividends

A little about Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.:
Wal-Mart is the industry leader in discount retail by a wide margin. In fact, it is the world’s largest company by revenue (according to the Fortune Global 500 list in 2014). To put things into perspective, Wal-Mart generates more sales than Costco (COST), Target (TGT), Amazon (AMZN), Kroger (KR), and Whole Foods (WF)...Combined!  Wal-Mart is also the biggest private employer in the world with more than two million employees. It's shear size and scale has thus allowed it to pressure suppliers into the best possible deals.

Wal-Mart positioning itself to take advantage of growing e-commerce demand.  In fact, Wal-Mart has seen some nice growth in digital sales during the last few quarters and is therefore shifted its recent capital spending to continue its growth in digital/e-commerce sales.  It is doing so through investments in its website, mobile platform, as well as people.

Wal-Mart is also spending capital to leverage its success and expand its market share at the expense of local grocery store chains through its neighborhood market stores.  In fact, the company is on track to open between 180 and 200 neighborhood market stores in the US in its full fiscal 2015.

In addition to its neighborhood market stores, Wal-Mart is also experimenting with even smaller express stores (1/10 the size of a Wal-Mart super center).

Today's Purchase:
We've been eyeing Wal-Mart for a little while now and certainly happy that we picked up a few shares of WMT earlier in the morning for $77.75 (the stock actually ended up closing .68 cents higher at $78.43).  With today's purchase of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (WMT), our family's dividend stocks portfolio now includes a total of 37 stocks/ETFs.

Our estimated forward dividends grew just a tad, adding another $15.68 to our yearly dividends which now stands at approximately $3,163/year.

Collection of RECENT BUYS (Summary) - March 2015

Since I began investing in dividend stocks approximately a year and a half ago I've been keeping a personal log of what other dividend bloggers and dividend investors are buying.  Until now, I've just done it for my own personal knowledge and it has proven to be a great resource I use when I have no idea what I should buy.

The collection essentially highlights the recent buys I have discovered throughout the dividend blog community. I Hope everyone has found it to be a great resource!

In case you just want a quick summary of what everyone has been buying this past month, below is a chart that depicts just that! :)
(The chart and table above only includes companies with more than 1 buy)

After a month where I only found 24 buys around the dividend blogging community, the month of March definitely saw a spike in activity.  In March, even though we probably missed a few buys while on our mini-vacation, we recorded a total of 62 buys this past month from fellow dividend bloggers.

Out of a total of 62 buys found around the dividend blogging community, 9 companies were bought more than once.  It appears that oil and energy is still leading the way in terms of overall purchases but the 9 companies that were purchased more than once came from multiple sectors.  Phillip Morris International Inc (PM) lead the way with a total of 7 buys, followed by Royal Dutch Shell (RDS.B) with a total of 6 buys, and National Oilwell Varco (NOV) rounded up third place.  There was a 2-way tie for fourth (T and TROW) and a 4-way tie for fifth (XOM, COP, JNJ, and OHI).

Our family made a total of 7 buys this past month. Of the 7 purchases, 5 were stocks in companies that made the list above (PM, RDS.B, NOV, JNJ, XOM).  I have to admit that I prefer to follow the masses when it comes to investing.  To me, it certainly helps validate the buy when you see others buying the same stock. When thinking independently, odds are generally higher for one person to be wrong than several individuals, right?
