With today's 300+ drop in the market, most of the market was in the red. That only meant one thing for us long term DGI investors...more opportunities to add to our portfolio at a discount.  We decided to pick a company recently mentioned in our Ask The Reader segment.  We understand why many have choose to stay away from oil and energy stocks. But at today's prices, we just couldn't resist the opportunity to lower our cost basis on a company stock that we already owned and decided to add 14 more shares of RDS.B to our family's dividend stocks portfolio.

We picked up 8 initial shares of ROYAL DUTCH SHELL (RDS.B) back in March of this year. With our purchase today, we now own 23 total shares of RDS.B in our family's dividend stocks portfolio. Our purchase today lowered our cost basis on RDS.B from $59.97 to $51.47. Additionally, our estimated forward dividends grew another $52.64, putting our yearly dividends at approximately $3,431/year (excluding our Edwards Jones account) and $3,790/year (including our Edward Jones account).

Since we had already held RDS.B shares in our family's dividend stocks portfolios (WF and EJ Accounts), the portfolio remains unchanged at a total of 47 different dividend paying stocks/ETFs and also 4 companies that either don't pay a dividend our has currently suspended their dividends.

Total Spent: $417.50
$14.60 added to annual dividends

On Thursday, we purchased Omega Healthcare REIT Investors, Inc (OHI) based on the results from our recent ASK THE READERS post.  With some extra funds laying around, we decided to also pick up share in Exxon Mobil Corp (XOM) which appeared to be our readers second pick. Since we already own shares of XOM, and the current price did allow us to average down our cost basis a bit, we decided to buy 5 shares of XOM on Friday, 6/26/15 at $83.50.

With this purchase, we now own 11 total shares of XOM in our family's dividend stocks portfolio. RECENT BUY - (NYSE: OXY)

WE RECENTLY PURCHASED THE FOLLOWING

Occidental Petroleum Corp (OXY)
Purchased 5 shares of OXY on 3/18/2015 at $71.94
Total Spent: $359.70
$14.40 added to annual dividends

The market saw a nice gain towards the end of the day after the Federal Reserve removed the word "patient" from its statement.  The biggest boost seemed to have gone to energy stocks and internationally exposed companies. We were quite lucky that we picked up a few shares of OXY earlier in the morning for just $71.94 as we saw a nice 1-day $2.07 gain with OXY finishing the day at $74.01.

Oil and energy certainly has a long way to recover, but I have to admit that it was a welcome site to see today's spike in the market. With the recent purchase, since we had already owned shares of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (OXY) in our family's dividend stocks portfolio, the total number of stocks/ETFs in the portfolio remains at 36.

With today's purchase, our estimated forward dividends grew just a tad, adding another $14.40 to our yearly dividends which now stands at approximately $3,148/year.

RECENT BUYS (NYSE: RDS, NOV and ESV)

WE RECENTLY PURCHASED THE FOLLOWING

Royal Dutch Shell Plc (RDS-B)
Purchased 9 shares of RDS-B on 3/13/2015 at $59.97
Total Spent: $539.73
$33.84 added to annual dividends

National Oilwell Varco, Inc (NOV)
Purchased 9 shares of NOV on 3/13/2015 at $48.54
Total Spent: $436.86
$16.56 added to annual dividends

Ensco Plc (ESV)
Purchased 30 shares of ESV on 3/13/2015 at $21.00
Total Spent: $630.00
$18.00 added to annual dividends

On Tuesday and Wednesday, we purchased a few shares of Exxon Mobil Corp (XOM) and Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), respectively. And today, with the another decline in the market, a total of 3 additional purchases were made when the stocks reach our limit price. So we took the opportunity to add shares of Royal Dutch Shell Plc (RDS-B), National Oilwell Varco, Inc (NOV), and Ensco Plc (ESV) to our family's dividend stocks portfolio.

We realize that there is still a rocky road ahead for energy and oil stocks but we truly believe that oil and gas prices will eventually recover and along with it would be a recovery in these stock prices. As we have seen with banks stocks since the huge collapse with lending industry in 2009, we remain confident that oil stocks will eventually recover. As long term investors, we therefore look at these moments as an opportunity to buy quality companies from out of favor sectors.

So with the recent purchases today, we added another NEW stocks to our family's dividend stocks portfolio. Royal Dutch Shell Plc (RDS) now brings our family's dividend stocks portfolio to a total of 36 stock/ETFs. National Oilwell Varco, Inc (NOV) and Ensco Plc (ESV) were companies we had already previously owned.

With the purchases mentioned above, our estimated forward dividends grew another $68.40 and now stands at approximately $3,223/year in dividends.
