Our purchase of HCP, Inc (HCP) was based on the results from our recent ASK THE READERS post. On Tuesday, after the votes were tallied, we set a limit order to buy HCP, Inc at $38.75. This afternoon, the market provided us with an opportunity to add another company to our family's dividend stocks portfolio. In fact, HCP, Inc actually set a new 52-week low today when it dipped as low as $38.53. We didn't pick up shares at the today's bottom but we are still happy grabbing a few shares at the limit price we had established. Plus, as typical for an initial purchase, we didn't spend a huge amount of capital. If HCP, Inc. continues to dip into the low $30s, we wouldn't have any problems grabbing few more shares to average down our cost basis.
With the recent purchase HCP, Inc (HCP), our family's dividend stocks portfolio now holds a total of 38 different dividend paying stocks/ETFs in the portfolio. Our estimated forward dividends grew another $20.34, putting our yearly dividends at approximately $3,196/year.

Congratulations on the purchase AFFJ! I own a few shares of HCP and although I am a bit down, I wouldnt mind averaging down also and to accumulate shares.
ReplyDeleteTake care!
FFF - thanks, glad to now be a fellow shareholder. We remain confident that HCP is a good long term investment at current prices. Nevertheless, we welcome the opportunity to lower our cost basis should the stock continue to dip when interest rates start to rise.
DeleteThanks for visiting. Best Wishes! AFFJ
Like the HCP buy. I just published a post for my June stock considerations and HCP is on the list. I know there are short term headwinds for all the REITs with bond yields and interest rates rising and set to rise plus HCP has its tenant issues with a DOJ investigation but many other solid companies had their share of bumps in the road too like JNJ just a few short years ago with its Tylenol recalls and a stock floundering in the $60s. While I am on the more conservative side with my portfolio holdings I do feel that having some exposure to REITs and specifically my favorite REITs, health REITs is important. While I don't see this sector ever being my largest in my portfolio it certainly deserves a space.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you DivHut, there are still more trouble looming in the real estate sector with bond yields and interest rates rising. Not to mention HCP has its own issues. Nevertheless, we still remain confident that HCP is a good long term play here at current prices. Definitely love that a conservative investor like yourself believes HCP at least belongs in a portfolio.
DeleteThanks for your insight. To future growth and prosperity. AFFJ
Congrats for the purchase!
ReplyDeleteLet's hope that the good business continues years to come!
Cheers!
Thanks Anha. Happy to buy in at our limit price. HCP has a long track record and we believe the current issues are just short term problems that many companies go through from time to time.
DeleteCheers to future growth and recovery! AFFJ
Nice purchase, AFFJ. Im sure HCP will turn things around and is a great company to own for the long run.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes

Thanks R2R. We are certainly glad to have had the opportunity to grab a few shares at our limit price. We can see ourselves holding HCP for the long haul. Well, at least long enough to see a turn-around occur. meanwhile, we are more than happy to collect the 5.8% yield. :)

AFFJ,
ReplyDeleteNice purchase. Despite the headwinds, HCP should be slow and steady returns, which is all you need with such a high initial yield on cost. Thank you for sharing and interacting with the community by using their input to guide some of your investment capital. Keep up the great work.
All the best.

Glad to be sharing our purchases with everyone. In fact, if you haven't seen it already, we actually maintain a collection of recent buys. It includes not only our Recent Buys but buys from around the DGI community.

HCP is my second largest holding, so I am with you. During the taper tantrum it a low of $36 and change and I got some then, but I also will be picking up more shares if it stays under $39. Cant beat that its a Champ and the yield if you are in for the long hall like I am. Nice buy.
ReplyDeleteMike A. - sounds like you made an initial purchase at a great time. We may see those prices still as interest rates begin to slowly rise later this year. Regardless, anything under $40, with those juicy yields is a nice buy. Totally agree that HCP is a great long term hold here at current levels.

Excellent buy. I've been looking at HCP for a while now but haven't pulled the trigger myself.
ReplyDeleteThanks Tawcan. You may still get your opportunity. Although I think the stock will recover in the long run, I really don't see it having an upward spike anytime soon. If anything, we might even see it go lower when interest rates rise. Either way, we would welcome you as a fellow shareholder.
DeleteBest wishes my friend. AFFJ
A good choice at a reasonable price. I am confident HCP will resolve their tenant issues. Over the long term, this should work out okay.

Same here Div4Son. There are some immediate headwinds that HCP is and will continue to face. But long term, HCP should reward us patient and loyal investors nicely. At least I hope so. :)
DeleteTo future growth (and a 5.8% yield while we wait!). AFFJ
AFFJ,
ReplyDelete"NICE" is all I have to say, just bought them myself last week I believe! Loving it.

Lanny - I guess great minds think alike. ;) Still keeping a close eye on HCP. I believe in the company long-term but think we may still get a few more opportunities to average down our cost basis in the short-term.
DeleteGlad to hear we are fellow shareholders. Cheers to future dividends! AFFJ
